Schools, Culture, and Society Graduate Program

The faculty and graduate students of Schools, Culture, and Society (SCS) invite you to pursue an advanced course of study with us at The University of Iowa.

The Schools, Culture, and Society program is an interdisciplinary program designed to enhance students’ ability to analyze the influence of social, historical, and philosophical factors that frame contemporary issues in the formal social enterprise of education.

In the SCS program, you can expect to be a part of an engaging and thoughtful academic community, with small classes that allow and encourage meaningful dialogue and faculty-student interaction.  Visit our SCS Experience page for more about what to expect as an SCS student. To see what some of our current students and faculty have been doing recently, visit our Spotlights page.

Disciplinary Foundation Areas in the SCS Program:

  • Sociology
  • History
  • Philosophy

As an SCS student, you will have the opportunity take courses in the Sociology, History, and Philosophy of Education and choose one discipline area as your area of emphasis.  For a detailed list of courses in each of these disciplinary foundation areas visit our courses page.  For a detailed list of course requirements see our M.A. and Ph.D. program pages. Program faculty have academic interests in each of these areas and will provide you with the teaching and research experiences that will prepare you well for a future as a professor, educational researcher, or policy analyst.

If you are interested in visiting with SCS students and faculty or just have a few questions, please contact Dr. Christopher Morphew.  We look forward to hearing from you.
