Big Ten Summer Institute

The 2nd Annual Big 10 Summer Institute

The 2nd Annual Big 10 Summer Institute will feature 2 three-credit courses, each of which will be taught by two faculty members from four of the Big 10's nationally-ranked graduate programs in higher education and student affairs. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage in intensive work with respected faculty members, network with graduate students from Big 10 and other universities, and enjoy early summer in a world-class college town.

Students who enrolled in the 2011 Institute course described it as simultaneously unique, fun, exhausting, exhilarating, and something they'd definitely recommend to their friends.  More on their comments here.

Each of the three-credit courses will include a one-week residency, scheduled for May 21-25, 2012. In early May, prior to the residency, the students in each course will meet virtually with the co-instructors. At this point, the first written coursework will be assigned, to be due on the first day of the residency. A final course assignment will be due approximately two weeks after the residency.

Beyond coursework and class meetings, the Institute will feature two organized dinners, and after-class meetings that allow participants to engage informally with their instructors and fellow students. Students and instructors from the two classes will also get together to debate and share policy-relevant ideas germane to the subject matter in both courses.

Institute Faculty and Courses

Each of the two Institute classes will be team-taught by two well-known faculty members at highly-ranked Big 10 higher education and student affairs programs. Each course will meet from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day of the Institute, with a lunch break and breaks (and snacks!) mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Students will be assigned reading prior to the start of class and will be expected to complete pre- and post-class written assignments, as well as a variety of assignments during the week of class.

Course meetings will involve small group assignments, lecture, and opportunities to (virtually) interact with relevant guest experts.

Organizational Change toward Equity and Inclusion will be taught by Rebecca Ropers-Huilman (Minnesota) & Kimberly Griffin (Penn State).

Michael Bastedo (Michigan) and Kris Renn (Michigan State) will teach College Student Cultures.

Details

The residency for the Institute will be May 21 - 25, 2012 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Students should plan to arrive in Iowa City no later than 5 p.m., May 20th.

Tuition and registration costs for the Institute will be $1750. This rate includes the tuition costs for the 3-credit course as well as twice-daily snack breaks and facility charges.  A minimum enrollment is required for each Institute course. Students will be notified when the requirement has been met.  If a course has not met the requirement by April 15th, it will be cancelled and all deposits will be returned to students.

Registration will begin in December 2011. Registration is available to students in Big 10 Higher Education and Student Affairs programs as well as graduate students outside the Big 10.

A deposit of $1000 will be due upon registering for the Institute. The remaining balance will be due on or before April 15th. All but the $1000 deposit is refundable if the UI Center for Conferences receives notification of cancellation on or prior to May 1st. There will be no refunds after that date.

Financial aid can be applied to tuition. Students should apply for aid through their own university.

Update!  (March 14, 2012)

We've received a lot of interest in this year's Institute courses and are pleased to have students from all over the nation register.  The early group of registrants includes graduate students from:  George Washington, Miami (OH), Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, Boston College, Nebraska, and UC-San Diego.  If you would like to be part of this great cohort, reserve your spot by registering soon.

Housing and Travel

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Iowa House Hotel, located on the corner of Jefferson and Madison Streets, 3 blocks from the Lindquist Center. The conference rate is $75 plus taxes per night. Please call 319.335.3513 to reserve your room before March 15.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Sheraton Hotel, downtown Iowa City, approximately 3 blocks from the Lindquist Center. The conference rate is $99 plus taxes per night. Please call 319.337.4058 to reserve your room before March 15.

All rooms will be released after March 15. When making your reservations at either the Iowa House or Sheraton, please indicate you are attending the Big 10 Higher Education Institute in order to obtain the conference rate.

Students making arrangements that require air travel should plan on flying into either the Cedar Rapids Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) or the Quad Cities Airport (MLI). CID is the closer of the two, but MLI often has cheaper airfares. There is a shuttle service from the Eastern Iowa Airport, but not from the Quad Cities airport. It may be possible to arrange shuttle transport to/from campus. Students interested in this opportunity should contact the Institute.

Before making flight reservations, please check with the Institute to make sure your scheduled course has the requisite enrollment to allow it be offered.

Should you require more information about the Institute, email the Institute organizer, Professor Christopher Morphew.
