Advancing Counselor Education

February 16, 2012

Malik Henfield and Hongryun WooThe Iowa Measurement and Research Foundation awarded Assistant Professor Malik Henfield a $28,433 grant to study counselors’ professional identity development.

Henfield will collect data from counseling experts all across the country to get their perceptions of the meaning of counseling professional identity.

“The goal is to create an instrument that can be used to help advance the field by producing the next generation of counselors with strong counseling identities,” Henfield said. “The instrument will be used as a tool to gain future funding.”

Henfield credits doctoral student and research assistant, Hongryun Woo, as serving a crucial role in the research proposal’s development.

“Hongryun is so passionate about the topic, it is infectious,” Henfield said. “She forced me to examine the area in much more depth than I ever had before. Her commitment to the profession, skills and intellect are why she was selected to work on the project. A better choice couldn’t be made.”
