With the hope of exciting children to pursue studies in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, Iowa’s first iExploreSTEM Festival was an enthusiastic success.
Significant updates and a new name replace the tests formerly known as the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. Now called the Iowa Assessments, the new tests are at the cutting-edge of giving students, and their teachers and parents, knowledge that will help them know if they are academically on track.
REACH Program tops the list of “Incredible Colleges of Students with Special Needs,” Associate Professor Michael Everson receives a 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award, Visiting Assistant Professor Clar Baldus is honored with a 2011 Outstanding Art Education Award, Associate Professor David Duys receives a 2011 Research Award, and Adjunct Lecturer Peter Teahen donates the proceeds of his new book to children affected by mass fatalities.
The college’s pre-service Teacher Education students connected with Columbus Junction and Des Moines through two volunteer service activities. Iowa’s Teacher Education students were also recognized as leaders within ISEA (Iowa State Education Association) when four were elected to the student organization’s highest executive offices.
Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass presented a keynote address on educational reform and Iowa’s “One Unshakable Vision” plan and a panel of College of Education experts responded to his ideas at an event organized the College of Education Speakers Series Committee, comprised of a group of education graduate students
Science Education doctoral student Morgan Yarker advanced practice by helping people understand scientific models at the 2011 NorWRF (Norway Weather Research and Forecasting model, an atmospheric science research computer model) conference.
