Who
Can Use This Lab?
The
College of Education Technology Center (ETC), in conjunction
with the ITS Computing Center, is a public work area for University
of Iowa students. The ETC emphasizes the integration of the
latest computer technology in an instructional setting. Equipment
includes networked three Macintosh and 35 Windows computers, containing
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives. Many are connected to flatbed scanners.
What
Can I Do Here?
Software
for multimedia and Web production can be found in the ETC.
Word processing, spreadsheet, database, statistical, and graphics
programs are also available. Macintosh and Windows computers
in the ETC are networked and can access the Internet, e-mail
and laser printers. Education students are eligible to schedule
and check out "carry out" equipment.
Can
I Check Out Equipment?
College
of Education students are eligible to check out carry out
equipment. Non-Education students may not. All
Education students are expected to surrender their photo ID
cards, or let the ETC retain a photocopy of their card while possessing equipment. Non-Education instructors
are only permitted to check out equipment for classroom use
within the Lindquist Center.

Reserving
Lab Computers
College
of Education students may reserve an ITC computer for one
and one-half hours per week. We do not reserve computers for
non course-related work. Reservations should be made at least
one day in advance to assure availability. To make a reservation,
call 335-5623, or stop by our staff office and provide your
name, date and time of request, the type of computer desired,
and the course number of the work you are doing. Please honor
reservation signs posted at computers. Failing to show up
within ten minutes of a reservation time will result in forfeiture
of your reservation.
Macintosh
The
current University of Iowa log-in screen should appear, with
spaces for your name (Hawk ID) and password, and buttons labeled
Restart and Log In. If this screen is not
showing, another user may already be logged-on. To log in,
type your Hawk ID and password and click the Log In
button (or press the Return button).
Saving
to USB Drive - Macintosh
When
you have completed your document, or must stop working,
DO NOT save your file to the hard drive,
because when you log off, the computer runs a script,
which cleans out the hard drive and erases any files left
on the drive. Rather, when you stop, save your file to
a portable storage device, i.e., USB flash/pen drive, etc.
1.
Click File and drag to Save
As.
2.
A dialog box will appear with boxes labeled Save
As: and Where:
3.
Type your file name in the Save As:
box.
4.
At the Where: box, select your
storage device from the drop down
menu. It should contain several locations to save to, including
Network, Hard Drive, Desktop, an icon of your
storage device and possibly other locations.
5.
Make sure the name of your device is displayed
in the Where: box.
6.
Click the Save button.
7.
After your first Save As, all
other overwrites or revisions may be saved to your storage
device by clicking File and dragging to Save.
Your file is automatically saved to your storage device, not the hard
drive, as long as the Where: location hasn't
been changed.
8.
If you want to save another copy or keep a first
draft, click File and drag to Save
As . Rename your file. Now you have two different
files.
Windows
"Welcome
to Windows" is the default screen. To reach the log-in screen,
press the key combination Control-Alt-Delete. This action
will get you to the log in screen. If neither of these screens
is visible, another user may already be logged-on. To log
in, type your User Name (Hawk ID) and Password. A "Log on to:"
drop down allows you to select the domain which, for College
of Education students, is IOWA.
Saving
to USB Drive - Windows
When
you have completed your document, or have to stop working,
DO NOT save your file to the Local Disk (C:) or My Documents,
because when you log off, the computer runs a script,
which cleans out the hard drive and erases any files left
on the drive. Rather, when you stop, save your file to
a portable storage device, i.e., USB flash/pen drive,
etc.
1.
Click File and drag to Save
As .
2.
In the File Name: box, type
the name of your document.
3.
A Save as type: box should also be
visible with a drop down menu.
4.
Select your storage device from the drop down
menu. Choices to save to include Local Disk (C:), DVD-RW
Drive (D:), My Documents and possibly others.
5.
Make sure the name of your device is displayed
in the Save In: box.
6.
Click the Save button.
7.
After your first Save As, all
other overwrites or revisions may be saved to your storage
device by clicking File and dragging to Save.
Your file is automatically saved to your disk, not the hard
drive, as long as the Save In: location
hasn't been changed.
8.
If you want to save another copy or keep a first
draft, click File and drag to Save
As . Rename your file. Now
you have two different files.
Printing
Information Technology Services is utilizing a new printing/payment system for ITS-supported computers and printers. Printing will be billed at the end of the month, rather than being prepaid; users will have an opportunity to check their print jobs before sending them to print, plus more. To learn more, when logged onto an ITS-based machine (Mac or Windows) please click on the "Details..." link in the ITC Printing balance pop-up box.
