Master of Arts
Minimum GPA requirements are the same
as those established by the Graduate College,
but most successful applicants have records that
exceed these standards. Candidates must have taken
the Graduate Record Examination General (Aptitude)
Test. Successful applicants' total scores for
the Verbal plus the Mathematics tests usually
exceed 1000 points. As detailed in the University
Catalog, applicants from other countries whose
first language is not English are usually required
to submit acceptable scores on the TOEFL exam.
We recommend that applicants who majored in psychology
as undergraduates submit scores on the Graduate
Record Examination Psychology test, however, this is not a requirement. Teaching experience
is desirable but not required. The review of applications
for fall semester admissions begins January 1,
when applicants who wish to be considered for
fellowships and other awards are screened. The
application deadline is February 1, and applications
received after this date might not be considered.
The application deadline for spring semester entry
is October 1. Admission decisions are announced
approximately one month after the application
deadline.
An acceptance of admission or financial
aid for the following fall semester that is given
or left in force after April 15 commits the student
not to solicit or accept another offer. Any offer
made by our program after April 15 will include
the proviso that the offer is void if acceptance
of a previous offer from another program listed
in Graduate Study in Psychology is in force at
that date. This policy is consistent with standards
set by the Board of Educational Affairs of the
American Psychological Association.

The minimum graduate grade-point average

required. Candidates who do not meet the standard
requirements may be admitted conditionally on
the basis of other evidence, such as high grade-point
average, strong academic preparation, and highly
supportive recommendations. However, acceptance
under these terms is extremely rare.
