Letters/References:

Letters for Employment: Employers and search committees expect letters from individuals who can speak convincingly about your scholarship, related activities, appointments, and internships as well as your potential as a teacher, researcher or administrator. Recent letters from individuals who are familiar with your abilities (professor, advisor, supervisor, employer, or cooperating teacher) are most valuable. Three to five letters are typically requested by employers and committees.

Letter Service for Graduate School Applications: Graduate schools are primarily interested in letters and recommendations written by professors who can speak authoritatively about your scholarship and your potential to succeed in graduate-level programs. Employers aware of your academic work, talents and promise may also be appropriate. Read the directions carefully before submitting application materials to graduate programs. A minimum of three letters are typically required for graduate applications.

Letter Writers: List the names and titles of your writers. If uncertain about the individuals who will submit letters on your behalf, leave the spaces blank. The maximum number of letters retained by The University of Iowa Letter Service is ten. As your career progresses, you may add new letters and retire letters that are no longer relevant to your career objective. Only professional and academic letters are included in your professional file. All letters become the property of The University of Iowa. Entries should appear similar to the sample below.
