Lesson Plan Objectives

From a list of books intended for college-bound students, students will choose a book to read with another classmate. With my approval, students may choose a book not appearing on the list I provide.

I want the students to have a choice of books so they feel more involved in the decision making process and they will have intrinsic motivation for the project. Students will have a month to read their chosen book. This will give them time to change books if they decide to do so. Weekly book checks insure reading progress.

Day 1 of the lesson plan calendar begins with the reading assignment completed. Students will be asked to bring their journal, character tracker, and vocabulary list on the first day. The vocabulary list will be collected on Day 1.

Overall Objectives:

  • To help students become critical thinkers about their novels.
  • To assist students learning to use "authority" to back up their valuable ideas.
  • To aid students in transferring ideas into writing, and then to continue to reshape them.
  • To introduce and evaluate different types of research.
  • To familiarize students with technology as a tool for learning.
  • To help students use technology as a means of communication with the outside world.
  • To show students how to communicate effectively through using different design issues.
  • To create a classroom community through group work.
