The Iowa ePortfolio™ Model is a web-based system designed to meet mandated standards and performance assessment requirements. It combines the integration of technologies, academic coursework, field experience, and a skills-based hiring tool for professional advancement.

The Iowa ePortfolio™ Model provides the architecture within which students can develop their skills, reflect on their practice, and showcase their strengths to a range of relevant audiences including accreditation teams at both state and national levels.

Read employer feedback from the national survey results

In a survey conducted by the Educational Placement Office, 80% of the responding administrators stated that a job seeker’s portfolio can be a significant selection tool. A well-prepared portfolio can contribute to interview success; however, hiring officials caution that a poorly-constructed portfolio can diminish employment opportunities.

“Teachers are expected to use technology and the ePortfolio™ is a fantastic way to do that. It is one example of using technology to document proficiency. Students who use an ePortfolio™ coming into an interview are ahead of their peers.” Ann Feldmann, Executive Director of Human Resources, Cedar Rapids School District

“University of Iowa students have an advantage when they share their ePortfolio™ during interviews. The University of Iowa is a step ahead and should take pride in that accomplishment.” Dr. Dennis Morgan, Associate Superintendent, Lake Forest, Illinois

Advantages: An ePortfolio™ documenting performance, pedagogy, and practice can showcase skills and abilities with just a click of the mouse. Employers have the advantage of simultaneously viewing an individual’s knowledge of web-based digital tools and professional capabilities.

Background about the ePortfolio™ Project:

The pilot project started in 1995 when Anthony and Achrazoglou took a traditional paper-based employment portfolio and developed an electronic version using web-based multimedia tools. Factors influencing the development of the ePortfolio Project included a need for a meaningful way to teach instructional technology, a desire for a new electronic tool for job-seeking, and a mechanism for building a flexible toolbox of professional skills that easily transfer from the campus setting to the world of work. Since these early ePortfolio models, several newer editions have been created to meet the ever-evolving needs of the academic and professional community.
