Martin Luther King Jr. Research Symposium Call for Proposals

Calling all undergraduates & graduate students interested in conducting and presenting research on diversity issues. It is that time of the year again for the MLK Research Symposium call for proposals.

The purpose of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Research Symposium is to showcase graduate and undergraduate research projects (at all stages) related to diversity.  We encourage posters highlighting issues of diversity including (but not limited to): ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, class differences, and special populations in education.  The symposium will be held in the Lindquist Center, Jones Commons from 12:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 29th, 2010. Posters will be displayed to a panel of judges a day earlier and that morning to be evaluated. The top posters will receive awards at the symposium.

Please click on the link below for the application form. The deadline for the proposals are December 1, 2009.  Please send completed applications to sharon-lee@uiowa.edu

Food Drive for the Johnson County Crisis Center

This year our theme is Making a Difference in Diversity!  In line with this theme, we recognize that our nation is going through some hard times right now and there are many people within our own community that are in need.  Therefore our goal is to raise 2010 lbs of food for the Johnson County Crisis Center by January 1, 2010! Help us by donating non-perishable foods and dropping them off in Crisis Center barrel located in the 2nd floor lobby in North Lindquist.

We will also be holding a drive at the Coralville Hy-Vee on December 5, 2009 from 9 am - 3 pm.  Feel free to drop off your donations there as well, and do your part in Making a Difference in Diversity!

  • The College of Education Diversity Committee is pleased to announce two panel discussions focusing on Disability and LGBT issues in the schools.  The ability to make learning accessible to all children in a classroom is a skill teachers must possess when leaving the UI.  Future teachers as well as current faculty and staff will benefit from hearing about the challenges faced in school by these individuals.

We invite you to join us for these discussions and to bring questions of your own.  The events are part of a class but are also free and open to the public.
