Co-sponsorhip of the Youth Development Summit: Strengthening and Valuing Latino Communities in Iowa, Richey Ballroom, IMU. Features guest speaker and workshops for Latino high school youths.

January 22

 

Human Rights Committee's MLK celebration event, "Human Rights Every Day," Noon to 1:30pm, Michigan Room, IMU. This is a panel discussion about how human rights affect our daily lives. For more campus-wide events, go to: http://www.uiowa.edu/~mlk/

Math Department's MLK celebration from 3:30pm to 5:00pm in the Main Lounge, IMU. The event includes a guest speaker (Dr. Roosevelt Johnson, Program Director, National Science Foundation AEGP Program), music by a Gospel Trio: The Anointed Praise, and refreshments.

February 10

 

Co-sponsorship of a free public forum, "Making Our Schools Safe for GLBT Students." This forum is hosted by the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force, Johnson County at The Center, 28 S. Linn St., Iowa City, at 7:00pm.  

February 12

 

Co-sponsorship of a talk by Professor Scott McGinnis on how the Chinese population in the U.S. constructs and maintains Chinese language education in the Chinese community. The event will be held at 4:30pm in N219 Lindquist Center.

 

February 19

 

Co-sponsorship of a community-wide Anti-Hate Crime Button/Ribbon Campaign. In lieu of recent alleged hate crimes against university minority students, the College of Eduation Diversity Committee, the College of Education Graduate Student Development Association, and the Asian American Coalition (AAC) initiated a button/ribbon campaign voicing our united, zero-tolerance stand against acts of violence toward individuals of difference. The campaign has grown to include representatives from various campus organizations: University of Iowa Diversity Committee; the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Union (GLBTU); Indian Culture Association (ICA); Vietnamese Student Association (VSA); OASIS; HARRT; Asian American Law Student Association (AALSA), etc. To distribute buttons and ribbons, tables will be set throughout the following weeks of February-April at various campus events (VSA's Tet Celebration, Cultural Diversity Day, Asian American Heritage celebrations, etc.) and sites, including Lindquist Center and the IMU.

   
MARCH 2004
 
March 5, 2004

 

Co-sponsorship of "Did You Hear the One about the Bigot?: A Careful Look at Hate and Humor." Hosted by Hillel House, this event features a roundtable discussion on humor and diversity, followed by a hilarious and informative talk with director/author John Waters. The event will start at the IMU and conclude at the Hamburg Inn #2.

Co-sponsorship of a lecture by Dr. Danling Fu, professor of teaching and learning at the University of Florida and author of My Trouble Is My English and An Island of English. This event is hosted by NCTE Student Affiliate and will be held at the Lindquist Center.

Brown Bag Lunch with Dean Damico
- This event is open to ALL students in the College of Education. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to bring their own brown bag lunch and join the Dean in Jones Commons to discuss issues related to the College of Education.
April 15-16


Co-sponsorship of the following events: Brown Bag Lunch: Cultural Ecology of Disability, Video: Lieba Perla, and a panel discussion to follow screening. This event is hosted by the College of Education Counseling, Rehabilitation and Student Development Program (CRSD). The purpose of the event is to expose faculty, staff and students to the scholarly work centered on cultural ecology of disability and disability identity development. Guest speaker: Dr. Joy Weeber.

Asian American Heritage Celebration: Keynote Speaker Event
College of Education Assistant Professor William M. Liu's talk is on "Understanding the Asian American Student: Culture, History, and Stereotypes." Professor Liu presents an overview of the Asian American experience, including culture, history, and the development of the model minority stereotype. Discussions address how these factors affect Asian Americans as well as educators in the educational system (e.g., some educators may miss the needs of Asian American students because of the model minority stereotype, etc.)

Annual College of Education Spring Picnic
(link to 2003 event) The Diversity Committee celebrates another productive year of promoting awareness, appreciation, and understanding of diversity on our campus. The picnic features a free lunch to students, staff, and faculty. The College of Education also announces the recipients of this year's Audrey Qualls Commitment to Diversity Award.

Holmes Scholar Reception - The College of Education is honoring current, former, and new Holmes scholars on Thursday, May 6, from 3:00pm to 4:30pm in Jones Commons. Everyone is welcome to attend.  
May 17 and May 23
United Action for Youth: GLBTQ Speakers' Bureau - In order to increase visibility and acceptance for GLBTQ individuals among the non-GLBTQ community UAY has received continued grant funding from the Gill Foundation. UAY is currently looking for volunteers for the speakers' bureau. This bureau will be available to give educational presentations on GLBTQ issues to area schools, school boards, social service agencies, parent groups, university classes, religious organizations, medical personnel, teacher organizations, state and local units of government, civic groups, counselors, childcare providers and more. Volunteer applications are due on May 17, 2004. and the Speakers' Bureau Training is on Sunday, May 23, 2004 from 1-5 p.m.
