Co-sponsor of the 8th Annual International Day
Conference. This is a full-day event for
middle and high school students. This year's conference
opens with a human rights related keynote address followed
by an interactive large group activity. Throughout the
day, students have the opportunity to attend small group
workshops focusing on human rights and international issues
which teach them about issues and experiences of people
from different cultural, ethnic, racial, and socio-economical
groups via hands-on activities and group discussions.

Donated funds to the Iowa Department of Education
"Bullying and Harrassment" Conference.
The
conference is intended to address the issue of bullying
and harassment in Iowa schools. Participants are encouraged
to come as a team and gain skills to counter bullying/harassment
in their schools. Participants learn approaches to address
bullying/harassment, root causes of bullying/harassment,
and legal/policy implications of bullying/harassment.

Research Symposium
This year's
event was held in conjunction with the Yager
Commitment to Diversity Conference . |

Commitment to Diversity Conference.
This year's Yager Commitment to Diversity Conference was
held in the conjunction with the MLK
Research Symposium. The conference featured
guest speaker, Dr. Jabari Mahiri, an associate professor
of education in the Language, Literacy, Society and Culture
program at the University of California at Berkeley.
His research focuses on strategies of reform in the teaching
and learning of urban youth with a specific emphasis on
writing development. He taught high school for seven
years in the Chicago Public Schools and has supervised
student teachers and mentored new teachers. In addition
to the keynote address: "Challenges of Diversity in New
Century Schools," the conference also hosted a series
of paper
presentations and workshops for graduate students and
area teachers . Talented youths from the Jo hnson
School of the Arts Gospel Choir kicked off the event with
high-spirited and beautiful music. |

the Iowa Juvenile Detention Home Youth Panel Discussion.
Youths from the IJDH discuss their lives in conjunction
with the "Seen but Rarely Heard Art Exhibit"
in the COE Curriculmn Library. This event gives pre-service
teachers and graduate students in COE a chance to intearact
with adolescent girls who have had difficult lives and
been incarcerated by the juvenile justice system. |

Diversity Spring Picnic
- The Diversity Committee celebrates another productive
year of promoting awareness, appreciation, and understanding
of diversity on our campus. The picnic features a free lunch
to students, staff, and faculty. The College of Education also
announces the recipients of this year's Audrey Qualls Commitment
to Diversity Award. This year's event will be held immediately
after the Asian American Speaker Event at 11:30PM to
1:00PM in the Lindquist Center Courtyard. If
it rains, the picnic will be held in Jones Commons. |
