Diversity Initiatives The College of Education strives to provide a welcoming environment for all who work, study, and visit here. Below are descriptions of some of our diversity initiatives. College of Education Diversity Committee The College of Education Diversity Committee is an active advisory committee comprised of faculty, staff and students from a diverse range of orientations and backgrounds. They serve the college through providing student support, advising the Dean on recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff and student body, and by increasing awareness of diversity in the College. Dean Crocco gave the keynote speech, The Arc of Justice and Achievement Gaps in Iowa at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Research Symposium on January 27, 2012. Read the transcript on the Committee's events archive page. The committee received a First Annual Diversity Council Honors Award in March 2009. Of 25 organizations recognized across the nation, it was the only institute of higher education chosen for the award. This is a tribute to the hard work of many College of Education faculty, staff and students over the years. See the write up in fyi. Minority Post-Doctoral Research Scholar Program The purpose of the postdoctoral program is to develop diverse population scholars for careers in college/university research and training. Selected scholars serve as full-time researchers in collaboration with a faculty mentor(s). Opportunities are available for teaching experience, as desired. Active searches are posted on the College of Education Employment Opportunities web page. Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Education and Culturally Competent Practice The Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Education and Culturally Competent Practice (MECCP) aims to develop culturally competent practice among students as they move into their professional careers or to enhance the cultural competence of professionals already in practice. This involves raising students' awareness of how worldviews shape what individuals value, interpret, learn and act upon. This program is based on a fundamental belief that there is a need for a proactive and sustained approach to educational reform and social justice. Principle sponsors of this certificate are the College of Education and the School of Social Work. For more information on the MECCP...
