Medical Student Perceptions about Clinical Practice

You are being invited to participate in this study about medical students perceptions of clinical practice. This research is an ongoing project headed by Daniel Clay, PhD, Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Iowa (daniel-clay@uiowa.edu), along with doctoral students, Nicole Hochhausen (nicole-hochhausen@uiowa.edu) and Julie Jenks Kettmann (julie-kettmann@uiowa.edu). This study involves the completion of brief questionnaires about patients you will encounter. It will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete. Thank you for your participation!

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?
This is a research study.  We are inviting you to participate in this research study because you are a medical student or resident.  The purpose of this research study is to learn more about how physicians view their patients.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL PARTICIPATE?
Approximately 500 people will take part in this study at the University of Iowa.  Up to 500 people may participate at a later date at other medical training programs.

HOW LONG WILL I BE IN THIS STUDY?
If you agree to take part in this study, your involvement will last for 20 minutes.

WHAT  WILL HAPPEN DURING THIS STUDY?
You will be asked to complete one very brief questionnaire packet containing a patient vignette and a few questions responding to the vignette.  Additionally, you will be asked to answer questions about patients you might encounter.   Participation is voluntary.  You may skip any questions you do not wish to answer.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THIS STUDY?
There are no foreseeable risks to participating in this study.

  WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS STUDY?
You may not benefit personally from being in this study.  However, we hope that, in the future, other people might benefit from this study because it will teach us about the dynamics of physician-patient interaction.

  WILL IT COST ME ANYTHING TO BE IN THIS STUDY?
You will not have any costs for being in this research study. 

WILL I BE PAID FOR PARTICIPATING?
You will not be paid for being in this research study.  

WHO IS FUNDING THIS STUDY?
The University and the research team are receiving no payments from other agencies, organizations, or companies to conduct this research study. 

WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?
It will be impossible to link responses to individuals.  We will keep your participation in this research study confidential to the extent permitted by law.  However, it is possible that other people may become aware of your participation in this study.  For example, federal government regulatory agencies and the University of Iowa Institutional Review Board (a committee that reviews and approves research studies) may inspect and copy records pertaining to this research.  If we write a report or article about this study, we will describe the study results in a summarized manner so that you cannot be identified. 

IS BEING IN THIS STUDY VOLUNTARY?
Taking part in this research study is completely voluntary.  You may choose not to take part at all.  If you decide to be in this study, you may stop participating at any time.  If you decide not to be in this study, or if you stop participating at any time, you won’t be penalized or lose any benefits for which you otherwise qualify.
