Web site standards

The University of Iowa College of Education presents itself to the world in diverse ways. In addition to personal interactions, our dozens of offices, centers, and departments communicate through a variety of media. It is imperative that, while respecting and encouraging independence and initiative, the College presents itself in a unified manner. One of our most powerful tools in reaching our various audiences is the world-wide web, where a unified identity is extremely important. Visitors come to the site from several directions. They should always know they are viewing a College of Education page.

The College of Education External Relations office in conjunction with University Relations developed the College's web site standards to help insure consistent and effective visual and navigational design of all parts of the College's web presence. External Relations will update the standards and the overall graphic design of the COE web presence as needed. The COE standards align with University web standards.

Each departmental and service center is responsible for the content of its web site, and for keeping its site consistent with COE and University standards.

The COE Education Technology Center is responsible for maintaining departmental and service center design templates. ETC will periodically audit COE web sites for adherence to COE and University standards, as well as assist departmental and service center personnel in maintaining their sites compliant to College of Education and University design standards.

As with any policy applied in a large institution, there are bound to be exceptions to the standards outlined here. If you think you may need an exception to some part of these standards, please contact the College (coe-webmaster@uiowa.edu) or University Webmaster (webmaster@uiowa.edu) to discuss the issue.

Please note that the standards outlined here only apply to official University sites. A wide range of pages and sites are not covered by this policy, including faculty, course, and student sites.
