Initiatives
The
College of Education strives to provide a welcoming environment
for all who work, study and visit here. Below are descriptions
of some of our diversity initiatives with links for additional
information.
College
of Education Diversity Committee
The College of Education Diversity
Committee is an active advisory committee comprised of faculty,
staff and students from a diverse range of orientations and
backgrounds. They serve the college through providing
student support, advising the Dean on recruitment and retention
of a diverse faculty, staff and student body, and by increasing
awareness of diversity in the College.
Community Educator Tuition Scholarship
These awards are for entering or newly admitted historically underrepresented minority students pursuing a Master's degree in the College of Education. Candidates must be active teachers or educators in schools in communities within commuting distance of The University of Iowa who intend to remain in the profession, hopefully in Iowa.
This program is funded by the Graduate College with the purpose of supporting the College's efforts to diversity the profession of education. Award recipients will receive tuition for up to three years. Up to four students may be supported by this scholarship at a time. A call for applications is sent out when an opening becomes available. Holmes
Scholars Program
The
College of Education is a member of the Holmes
Partnership. Annually, one or more minority
graduate students whose programs of study and interests overlap
with the Holmes Partnership Goals are identified for selection
to the prestigious Holmes Scholars Program.

Minority
Post-Doctoral Research Scholar Program
The purpose of the postdoctoral program is to develop diverse population scholars for careers in college/university research and training. Selected scholars serve as full-time researchers in collaboration with a faculty mentor(s). Opportunities are available for teaching experience, as desired.

Multicultural
Education Certificate Program
We
are seeking approval for a proposed interdepartmental Multicultural
Education Certificate Program within the College of Education
.
This
program aims to educate students to develop culturally competent
practices, which involves raising students' awareness of how
worldviews shape what individuals value, interpret, learn
and act upon. This program is based on a foundational belief
that there is a need for a proactive and sustained approach
to social and educational reform.
Yager Diversity Conference Archives
The 2007 Yager Diversity Conference was held on Monday, April 23, 2007 at the Iowa Memorial Union. The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, President of the University of Maryland Baltimore and author of "Beating the Odds" and "Overcoming the Odds". Additionally, members of the community formed three Diversity Initiatives panels to share information about the community, university and school diversity initiatives with which they are involved.
Previous Yager Diversity Conferences include one held January 27-29,
2005 in Lindquist Center. Included in the conference
was the announcement of the Phyllis M. Yager Commitment to
Diversity Award recipients; a keynote address by D. Jabari
Mahiri from the University of California at Berkeley; conference
presentations; MLK research poster sessions and a half-day
workshop for area teachers with Dr. Mahiri titled "Connecting
Student Writing to Youth Art and Culture".
