Community Educator Tuition Scholarship

Awards for active minority teachers or educators in schools in Iowa pursuing a Master's Degree in the College of Education.

These awards are for entering or newly admitted historically underrepresented minority students pursuing a Master's degree in the College of Education.  Candidates must be active teachers or educators in schools in communities within commuting distance of The University of Iowa.  The program is funded by the Graduate College with the purpose of supporting the College's efforts to diversify the profession of education.  U.S. citizenship is required.

Award recipients will receive in-state tuition for 9 - 18 credit hours per fiscal year for up to three years.  Students may determine the distribution of the hours over the academic year and summer term, however a minimum of 9 credit hours must be taken in each of the three fiscal years of the award.

Requirements

  • Award recipients must maintain at least a 3.2 GPA to retain the award

Application

We encourage submission of applications by October 15 for openings the following Spring semester and by March 15 for openings for the following Fall semester.  Applications recieved after those dates will be considered if there are vacancies.

Applications should include:

  1. A statement (2 page maximum) from the applicant describing in specific terms how an MA/MS will enable them to accomplish their professional goals.  In other words, the Committee will want to know how this degree will enhance their professional future and their plans for remaining in the profession as a school administrator, school counselor, or classroom teacher.  In this statement, individuals should also address the roles they will assume as school leaders.
  2. Professional resume
  3. Complete undergraduate transcript (an official transcript is not necessary)
  4. Three letters of recommendation which address the leadership abilities, professional promise and/or commitment to Iowa education of the applicant.  Submit one letter from each of the following:
    • University of Iowa graduate advisor
    • The applicant's employing school or institution
    • Anyone able to comment on the applicant's scholarly and/or professional promise.
