Parking
In Iowa City, public parking is available in parking ramps. For the AT Summer Institute, the closest ramp will be the Capitol St. Ramp located on the corner of Clinton and Burlington. From there it is a short walk down Burlington to the Lindquist Center where the AT Summer Institute will be held.

2011 Assistive Technology Summer Institute
The Assistive Technology Summer Institute is a unique summer
learning opportunity that combines discussion of current relevant topics
in AT with hands-on learning opportunities of some of the most recent
and most commonly used AT software programs.
Objectives
Upon completion of the AT Summer Institute, the participants should be able to:
- Successfully use and be able to train others to use AT
software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking Version 9, Kurzweil 3000,
Read and Write Gold, WordQ and SpeakQ, IntelliTools, and Clicker 5
- Understand the basics of NIMAS and non-NIMAS and how they
affect obtaining accessible materials for students with varying
disabilities
- Understand how to incorporate the concept of Universal Design for Learning into a classroom setting to benefit all students
- Identify the key issues involved with AT and transitioning
both between schools within a district and from a secondary to post
secondary school
- Understand the legal requirements of AT in a school setting
- Be able to effectively write AT into an IEP.
Instructor
ICATER’s AT Summer Institute will be conducted by James R. Stachowiak,
ATP. James is the coordinator of ICATER, holds a Master’s Degree in
Biomedical/Rehabilitation Engineering from the University of Michigan
and is a RESNA certified Assistive Technology Practitioner. As
coordinator of ICATER, James has presented AT topics to numerous classes
within the College of Education at the University of Iowa. He has also
presented day long AT seminars at Holy Family Schools in Dubuque and
Principal Financial Group in Des Moines. James is also the instructor
for ICATER’s online course An Introduction to Assistive Technology.
