Creative Writing: The Vignette

Whether you write novels, stories, essays or poems, the study and practice of vignette writing will expand and improve your craft…

Vignettes are short, compressed, evocative pieces that are self-contained wholes. Vignette writing can be used to outline the plot of a novel or story, generate vocabulary for a poem, help flesh out an idea for a song, or help you discover a guiding metaphor for an essay. We will look at examples of vignette writing from the genres of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and song lyrics, studying the work of master writers. Our emphasis will be on process and the combination of inspiration, talent and craft. Obviously, you bring the talent, and your teacher will facilitate your knowledge of craft and guide you toward finding inspiration in both ordinary and non-ordinary aspects of your lives.
