Blank Summer Institute (BSI) - June 29-July 11EligibilityAll Iowa Students enrolled in public or approved private schools who are currently in grades 7 or 8 are eligible for participation. Students do not have to be identified by, or enrolled in, a talented and gifted program to be nominated. Test Scores and GradesStudents who are being nominated should have high scores on the subtests of standardized tests that are most closely related to their nomination area. A copy of the student's Iowa Test of Basic Skills score report or equivalent test must be included with these nominations. While standardized test scores will be considered in the selection of students for BSI, other criteria will also be taken into consideration. Samples of a student's work, teacher recommendations, and awards/honors in related areas will be carefully reviewed. A copy of the student's current grade report must accompany all nominations.Special AccomplishmentsTalented students may manifest their talents through involvement in cocurricular activities. Nomination committees will pay special attention to hobbies and other interests that may demonstrate abilitiy or talent in the course areas. Awards or participation in competitions or contests (i.e., science fairs and art contests) are evidence of the extra effort talented students exert in areas in which they excel.Desired Student CharacteristicsAll nominated students should be highly motivated and possess high levels of task commitment and emotional maturity.IN ADDITION, SOME OF THE SPECIAL QUALITIES THAT ARE DESIRABLE FOR EACH OF THE CORE AREAS ARE:Advanced Science
