Factors, Multiples and Leftovers focuses on the development of students’ multiplicative reasoning power.…
Students go far beyond computation to a solid understanding of the meaning of multiplication through constructing and analyzing area models and by composing and decomposing those models to understand relationships including the distributive property of multiplication over addition.
Instructor
Dr. Robert van Deusen currently teaches Elementary Mathematics Methods classes at The University of Iowa and is an Education Analyst at Pearson Educational Measurement. He is a former classroom teacher of grades 2 – 6, Junior High Math Teacher, Instructional Computing Consultant, Curriculum Coordinator, Assessment Coordinator, Technology Coordinator, Elementary Principal, and Middle School Principal. He has worked for Cedar Rapids Schools, Grant Wood AEA, Linn-Mar Schools and Clear Creek Amana Schools. He has also done extensive consulting with state Departments of Education, mathematics and computing advocacy groups. He is co-author of the book, The Computer and Higher Order Thinking Skills. Dr. van Deusen has taught several other courses for the Belin-Blank Center in the past five years.
