Challenges for Elementary School Students (CHESS)

Graphic Design: Form, Function and Fun! (Grades 4 - 6) 9 am-12 pm

This class is an introduction to the principles of graphic design and the many forms design occupies. Students will have the opportunity…

to explore the use of form and composition, type, and color theory through the design and creation of posters, magazine spreads, book designs, and logos. We will experience new computer technologies in design production as well as a possible trip to Living History Farms and to observe and print on an early printing press with wood-type lettering.

Instructor

Sarah McCoySarah McCoy received her B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Iowa in May 1999 with an emphasis in Graphic design, and minors in Journalism and Art Education. She received her Master of Arts Degree in Studio Art-Graphic and her Master of Fine Art from the University of Iowa. Sarah also has a minor in Photography. She studied at the University of Iowa Center for the Book with concentrations in Letterpress Printing, Calligraphy, and Artists’ Books and Bookbinding. She previously taught Graphic Design at the University of Iowa and currently teaches at Drake University. She has been a Visiting Artist, and a graphic designer in a creative department for a hardware and software company in Austin, Texas. Her hobbies include letterpress printing, collecting old type, photography, hiking, running, bocce ball, listening to a wide variety of music, traveling, visiting museums, and friends.
