Frequently Asked Questions about NAASE
- What age are NAASE students?
-
The majority of NAASE students are at least 16 years old. All applicants must complete the equivalent of their junior year in high school before entering the program.
- Will I graduate from my high school if I am selected for NAASE?
-
Your high school administration will decide if you are eligible for a high school diploma.
Nearly all high schools will apply first-year college credit toward their graduation requirements, and, to date, all NAASE students have been able to obtain their high school diploma.
We encourage students to explore options for meeting their high school’s requirements and can provide your high school with transcripts of your work at Iowa.
- What kinds of social and academic support systems are in place?
-
NAASE students have the full support of staff at the Belin-Blank Center.
Students have regular individual meetings with the staff and see them and other first-year NAASE students in weekly seminars.
In addition, students have opportunities to attend social events and have access to counseling and tutors through the services of the Belin-Blank Center.
Academic advisors, honors program staff, and university offices across campus are also available to help.
The important thing to remember is that when you need something ask… we’ll help you find the answer.
NAASE students also receive priority registration each semester of their undergraduate career.
Students can choose their classes each semester before classes are opened up to the majority of the student body.
This means first-year and second-year students can choose their classes before many seniors!
- What happens at orientation?
-
NAASE students and parents attend a special session during the University’s two-day summer orientation process.
Students register for classes, meet their academic advisor, and become familiar with The University of Iowa campus during orientation.
There is also a Welcome Day for new NAASE students before classes start in August.
- How long does NAASE last?
-
Formal participation in NAASE is during your first year on campus.
There are, however, many opportunities to remain involved in NAASE throughout your career at Iowa.

Testimonial
Classes here are entirely different than high school or anything I expected. I absolutely LOVE lectures. It gives me a chance to process information and then take it back and review it in a discussion. I love it!
