FULLY SUBSIDIZED AP TUITION, AND MATERIALS COSTS FOR STUDENTS
What’s covered by the Iowa Online AP Academy in 2008-2009?
The Iowa Online AP Academy (IOAPA) covers the costs for Apex online Advanced Placement® Courses ($450 for tuition and required materials) for students in schools registered with IOAPA. See IOAPA Course List. IOAPA does not cover the cost of the AP exam.

Books that are listed as "required" are included for the 2008-2009 school year and will be shipped to the site coordinator at the start of the semester. Optional books are the responsibility of the school or student. All books should be kept by the school for use in future classes.

There is one start date for each semester. The fall enrollment deadline is June 30. Courses follow a traditional semester schedule. Block scheduling is not available and full-year courses can not be started mid-year.

NOTE: IOAPA Online AP courses are provided as an option for Advanced Placement courses that are not available at the school site. These courses are not intended to replace classes taught at the school site, nor are they intended to be a "virtual school" apart from the school program. Schools with more than a few students interested in a particular AP course are encouraged to seek AP training for their staff.

Start Dates for 2008-2009 online classes:

Fall classes start August 25, 2008. Enrollment begins April 2 and ends June 30.
(No Fall enrollments after June 30.)

Each school is responsible for ordering and administering the AP Exams in the spring. Schools must register each fall with The College Board to be an AP Program site in order to give AP exams.

A Site Coordinator, Technology Coordinator, and on-site school mentor need to be assigned by the school to support students enrolled in IOAPA courses.

School Registration
If your school previously registered with the Iowa Online AP Academy, you are still registered for 2008-2009 and eligible for all the opportunities. Please let is know if you have changes in your principal, Site Coordinator, or Technology Coordinator. The mentor will be confirmed in the fall before classes begin. If you are new to IOAPA, click on the School Registration link on the left side of the IOAPA home page to print a copy of the School Registration Form. See other links on this site for Online Course opportunities.

SCHOOL MENTORS
We recognize the importance of having an on-site school mentor work closely with students taking online courses. Mentor support plays a tremendous part in student success. One online mentor at each school site should be assigned to monitor students participating in IOAPA courses at their school. Mentors must complete a mentor enrollment form before classes start each semester. The role of an effective mentor is to:

  • Meet 2 or more times a week with students.
  • Proctor exams -- all exams need to be proctored by the school during the course, there is no online option for IOAPA students in 2008-2009.
  • Review online student progress often.
  • Follow up on submitted assignments to make sure they are being received. Be sure to have students submit the assignments after faxing.
  • Read email and correspond with instructors.
  • Talk with parents.
  • Request for adding or removing students from a course as necessary.
  • Receive final grades and submit to school transcript office. For greatest benefit to students use letter grades, not pass/fail designations on transcripts.
  • Check to make sure the school has ordered an Advanced Placement exam for each student planning to take a College Board exam in May.

Mentors are a student’s lifeline between IOAPA classes and the local school. Mentors help students establish expectations for their online course and monitor student progress, keeping in touch with parents, instructors, and other support staff. The school mentor completes an enrollment form at the beginning of each semester.

At the end of the school year the designated mentor at each school site will receive a $200 stipend for each semester they actively monitor IOAPA students in their school. Mentor verification forms will be sent to the school’s Site Coordinator in April. Mentors can be changed, if needed, at the beginning of a semester. Schools may choose to add additional mentors at their own expense.

Key Points to Consider
Educators, as you work with students for enrollment in fall and spring classes, there are a few things we would like you to keep in mind. Please be aware that each student enrolled costs $450 per semester for this program. There is a limited grace period for tuition refund credit. Once a student enrolls in a course online, the tuition is only partially refundable to the grant program when a student drops within the first two weeks of class. Please note: When a student drops a course there is currently no reimbursement requested but this does eliminate opportunities for future students.

Commitment
It is important for schools, students, and parents to make a commitment when a student enrolls in a course.
As you enroll students please consider carefully:

  • Student preparation: All courses have suggested prerequisites listed in the course catalog and pre-tests are available for AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Physics B, and AP Statistics.
  • Your school’s technical capacity (refer to the Apex technical requirements).
  • Student mentor support.
  • Student success characteristics for online work.
  • Student schedule and time limitations (each AP course will require class time plus approximately 10-15 hours of additional work).
