Introduction
The Challenge Math program is designed to strengthen and accelerate 5th-6th grade students' pre-algebra and algebra skills. Students receive direct instruction and do
independent work. Additional challenge problems are provided during each session for home exploration. Sample topics are: problem solving strategies, algebra skills, metric system, computation with decimals and fractions, perimeter, circumference, area, volume, and percents.

Class Size
Minimum of ten, maximum of fourteen students per class.
Text
The materials for the Challenge Math include teacher-generated materials and Challenge Math by Edward Zaccaro. Each student is responsible for purchasing his/her own Challenge Math book. You may purchase this book from us at a discount ($20) with your Challenge Math program registration. If you purchase this book through us, we will give it to your child on the first day of class. The book is also available for purchase on-line for $23.95.
Study
During class time students are expected to provide clearly written solutions to problems. Students are expected to explain their reasoning. Quizzes may be given periodically to help students maintain previously learned skills. Homework may be assigned.
Dates for Fall
Challenge Math is a semester program with 3 ½ hour classes (9 AM to 12:30 PM) taking place on five Saturdays during the 2008 fall semester (see site schedule link). Challenge Math will not be offered during the spring semester.
Location
Challenge Math class sites for the 2008 fall semester are Des Moines and Iowa City.
Cost
Tuition is $340 for the series.* This fee includes teacher salary, all of the materials costs beyond the book purchase (additional $20 if purchased through us), and all curriculum development costs. The Belin-Blank Center underwrites the administrative costs, including the salary for a graduate assistant assigned to help with Primary Challenge Math and any assessments that might be coordinated by the Belin-Blank Center.
Financial aid is available for qualifying families.
*This is a semester fee, and we do not pro-rate the fees. There are no refunds or discounts for classes students must miss.
Note
Please send a healthy snack (fruit, juice, crackers) to class with your child to enjoy during a mid-morning break.
