This class is designed to develop an awareness of the factors involved in teaching thinking skills as a total concept critical for lifelong learning. The relationship between critical and creative thinking is examined and published programs are reviewed.

This workshop studies innovators: how they thought, methods of implementation, how their innovations changed the way things work. Participants will each identify one goal towards which they are striving and consider how to achieve it, applying methods of innovators studied. Methods learned apply to education, business, fine arts, philosophy, and sciences.

This workshop will focus on the intersection of the unique challenges presented by talented students and the challenges of designing, implementing, and assessing quality inquiry-based social-studies instruction. Participants do not need to have a background in social studies or social studies education. Emphasis will be on primary resources in history.

07S:173 Programming/Curriculum for High-Ability Students: Real-World Problem Solving (Prog)
High-ability learners synthesize both content and research by tackling real-world problems. Participants learn about complex instruction, PBL, and ill-structured problems, and will practice methods to seek answers to their own “real-world problems” within the context of gifted education.

This workshop provides an overview of the theories underpinning contemporary definitions of creativity. Participants will learn about instruments that were developed to measure creativity, as well as explore activities in the school environment that enhance or inhibit student creativity.

This workshop explores psychological aspects of giftedness and strategies that support the successful development of the gifted. Topics include socio-emotional concerns, career development, learning styles, and attitudes toward education and achievement. Strategies for guidance and advocacy are explored through role play and demonstration.
