Dear Colleague:
Advanced Placement ® (AP) test scores are the most meaningful and reliable academic standard we have in our high schools. Your commitment to professional development in AP is an investment in a process that has worked for students for 50 years.
College admissions officers increasingly look for AP coursework on applicants’ transcripts, but before the 2007-2008 academic year, any school wishing to use the AP designation for transcripts, course listings, or other publications must complete a new College Board audit for each AP course. Our AP Teacher Training Institute (APTTI) will prepare every participant to complete the course audit.
The APTTI instructors, all endorsed as College Board Consultants, have extensive experience in classroom teaching, examination development, and annual examination “reading.” APTTI participants have commented enthusiastically about the knowledge demonstrated by our AP instructors, regarding both their content areas and the AP Program.
Institute evaluations have applauded the time spent discussing various approaches to the AP Program; discussing new handouts and content-specific materials to use in class; and analyzing the tension between “teaching to the examination” and concentrating on the discipline. Perhaps most of all, participants valued “actual participation—hands-on learning,” and “finding out others were in the same boat!”
I think the APTTI will be an exciting educational experience for you, and I believe it will help you and your school in your ongoing efforts to develop appropriately challenging standards for your students. The experience will prepare you for the College Board audit, and it will help you develop a network of colleagues who share your commitment to excellence.
We look forward to having you join us in Des Moines, Iowa, for the 2006 AP Teacher Training Institute.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Colangelo, Director
