Iowa Department of Education Announcement

In October, 2005, the Iowa Department of Education in partnership with the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development received a competitive Jacob K. Javits grant. The 3-year research project supported by the grant focuses on gifted and talented students who have educational difficulties. These students - who are referred to as "twice-exceptional" - face a double risk in the educational environment. On one hand, because of their strong academic potential, their difficulties are often not recognized. On the other hand, because they "fail to flourish," their strong academic potential can be overlooked.

All data gathering phases of the project have been completed. We have completed the project goal of comprehensively assessing 75 students. Although we are no longer assessing students as part of the Javits project, we continue to conduct private assessments of gifted students who are twice-exceptional and encourage you to contact nancy-whetstine@uiowa.edu, the clinic’s administrative assistant, for additional details regarding procedures to schedule an appointment.
