General Information
PURPOSE
The Annual Summer School for Helping Professionals offers classes for community, agency, and education practitioners working with or interested in individuals, groups, families, and organizations.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of individual classes the participants should be able to:
- Identify issues relating to counseling persons of all ages and cultures.
- Compare specific theoretical constructs of counseling.
- Recognize important knowledge from the specific class content areas.
- Practice the cooperative relationships which need to be established among helping professionals.
- Evaluate referral networks with other professionals working in different agencies.
- Assess their own clinical skill in order to identify and anticipate difficulties with clients.
- Formulate and evaluate their own administrative and supervisory skills.

ACADEMIC
CREDIT
One (1) semester hour of Academic credit from The University of Iowa is available for all TWO DAY classes, and two (2) semester hours of credit are available for the four day workshops. Academic credit is NOT available for the one day workshops. A paper or project, due September 1, is required to earn one semester hour of credit for a 2 day class or two semester hours of credit for a 4 day class. Credit will be recorded in early October on a University of Iowa transcript as 07C:182 Workshop for Helping Professionals.
Registration
for academic credit for 4 day workshops and the first 2 day session takes
place on Monday, August 3 from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. and
for the second 2 day session on Wednesday, August 5
from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. in the Lindquist Center North Lobby. Instructors of classes available for
academic credit will explain paper/project requirements
during the first hour of class. Participants will be
able to make changes in their credit registrations until
11:00 a.m. on the first day of class. You must have
registered for the ASSHP and have received confirmation
of your course selection prior to registering for University
of Iowa academic credit on August 3 or August 5.
Academic credit from The University of Iowa is available for all TWO DAY and four day classes. Your ASSHP session registration fee will be applied toward the cost of tuition if you select the academic credit option for that session. Do not send payment for tuition for academic credit with your ASSHP registration and fee. You will be billed for the balance of the tuition by The University of Iowa on September 1. Undergraduates are graded S (Satisfactory) or F (Fail) only. Graduate students are graded S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory), but may request a letter grade. Instructors are not required to honor requests for a letter grade. Grades will be recorded in early October. University credit is granted to participants who properly complete a credit registration form, pay the tuition fee, and demonstrate an understanding of course content at a prescribed level of competency. CONTINUING
EDUCATION UNITS
An additional fee of $10.00 is required
for all types of CEU credit. The CEU has been designed
to give recognition to persons continuing their education
and keeping up-to-date in their chosen field or profession.
Please indicate on your registration form the type of
CEU requested.
The
University of Iowa (#4062) is recognized by the National
Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education
for National Certified Counselors. We adhere to NBCC
Continuing Education Guidelines.
The
Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification has approved
IBC credit for selected courses which are indicated
in the course descriptions.
The
University of Iowa is an approved provider for General
CEUs for this program.
On October 5, 2005 the Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners changed the rules for social work CEUs. The Board no longer approves continuing education sponsors, and now directs its licensees to review the continuing education criteria established in the rules. Social work CEUs will be offered but it is up to the participant to determine if this program is deemed appropriate for your profession. If you have questions, please contact the Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners.
CEUs
awarded for attendance will be:
IBC, NBCC, Social Work, and General Credit in the
amount of 6 hours or .6 CEUs per day.
The
University of Iowa College of Nursing is an Iowa Board
of Nursing Approved Provider, Number 1. Attendance per day for
an ASSHP workshop will award 6.6 hours or .66
CEUs per day.
REGISTRATION FEES
Payment
is requested at the time of registration. Mastercard, Visa and checks accepted.
The Annual Summer School for Helping Professionals will offer an exciting variety of 1, 2 and 4 day workshop sessions.
The 4 day and the first session of 2 day classes will begin on Monday, August 3, 9 a.m. and adjourn on Tuesday, August 4 at 4:00 p.m.
The second session of 2 day classes will begin on Wednesday, August 5, 9 a.m. and adjourn on Thursday, August 6 at 4:00 p.m.
The 1 day sessions will we held each day Monday through Thursday and begin at 9 a.m.
Participants may elect to combine a two day session with a one day session for three days of learning, combine two 2 day classes or take four 1 day sessionsor one 4 day session for a full 4 days of workshop participation.

Early Registration Fees if received on or before July 15 are:
The registration fee to attend a one day workshop is $100
The registration fee to attend two days of workshop(s) - (1 two day or 2 one day) is $175
The registration fee to attend three days of workshops - (3 one day, or 1 two day and 1 one day) is $275
The registration fee to attend 4 days of workshops - (4 one day, or 1 two day and 2 one day, or 2 two day) is $325.
Late Registration - The following fees if received after July 15 are:
The registration fee to attend a one day workshop is $125
The registration fee to attend two days of workshop(s) - (1 two day or 2 one day) is $200
The registration fee to attend three days of workshops - (3 one day, or 1 two day and 1 one day) is $300
The registration fee to attend 4 days of workshops - (4 one day, or 1 two day and 2 one day, or 2 two day) is $350.
Undergraduate and Graduate Student Registration Fees:
With proof of student status, a special student rate will be given of $50 per day. Attendance at a one-day workshop is $50, two days = $100, three days = $150, and four days = $200.
Please Note: Academic Credit is NOT offered for one day workshops only the two day and four day workshop courses. The two day session registration fee will be applied toward the cost of tuition if you choose the academic credit option for that session. REFUNDS
All but $30 of the registration fee is
refundable if inability to attend is made known to The
Center for Conferences (319-335-4141)
prior to August 1. No refunds can be made for later notification.
HOUSING
Participants are responsible for obtaining
their own housing. A block of rooms has been reserved
at the Iowa House adjacent to the Iowa Memorial Union.
Per night room rates are $80 plus tax. Please specify if Ethernet connection
is necessary when making your reservation. You may make
your Iowa House reservation by calling the Iowa House
at 319/335-3513. You MUST indicate that you are attending
the Annual Summer School for the Helping Professionals.
Parking in the IMU ramp is complimentary for those staying
in the Iowa House. Rooms will be held in reserve until
July 10.
PARKING
Parking is complimentary in the IMU ramp for those staying at the Iowa House Hotel. Parking is also available in the downtown parking ramps at a current daily rate of $.75 per hour. The Old Capital Parking Ramp is located on Capital and Burlington Streets directly across from the Lindquist Center. The Sheraton Ramp is located on the corner of Dubuque and Burlington Streets 2 blocks from the Lindquist Center.

CERTIFICATE
of ATTENDANCE
Certificates of Attendance will be provided only if requested. Please indicate your request on your registration form. This certificate is NOT valid for CEU approval. A $5.00 fee is required with your registration payment. Your certificate will be available for pickup in the Ballroom Lobby registration area on the last day of class.
CEU CERTIFICATE:
CEU Certificates will be mailed four-six
weeks after the conference. Please indicate the type
of CEU requested on your registration form. A $10.00
fee for CEU processing is required with your registration
payment.
